Languages of The World
Program Purpose: Students who complete World Language courses will be able to communicate effectively using all modalities of language, examine and demonstrate cultural knowledge, and use technology to develop language and cultural competence.

Transfer Information
Students planning to transfer need to consult with a counselor, prepare a Student Education Plan, and take advantage of support services available in the Career Transfer Center located in Fountain Hall, (805) 378-1536. Transfer students interested in specializing in Chinese who wish to qualify for an Associate in Arts Degree could explore International Studies or Liberal Studies as a possible major.

Introduces beginning Chinese Mandarin language in a cultural context through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasizes student interaction with authentic language in cultural context. Continues beginning Chinese language acquisition in a cultural context through listening, speaking, reading and writing at the second semester level. French Courses
Provides on-the-job learning to develop effective work habits, attitudes, and career awareness in paid or unpaid internships that are related to the discipline. Involves the development and documentation of learning objectives and the completion of an internship paper, presentation, or project. Includes both workplace supervisor and faculty adviser feedback and/or written evaluations. Course Credit Limitation: To take this course, contact the Career Transfer Center. Students receive one unit of credit for each 60 hours unpaid or 75 hours paid work. May enroll in up to 4 units a semester with a maximum of 16 total units of any type of work experience.

Provides instruction of Spanish at the elementary level that builds upon the existing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and the cultural heritage and knowledge of heritage speakers. Increases awareness of linguistic registers, discuss items beyond the familiar routine and develop an appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures. This course is entirely conducted in Spanish. The course is equivalent to SPAN M110. This course is designed for heritage speakers of Spanish or other linguistically qualified students.

Emphasizes further practical competence and communicative skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing, through the study of Spanish-speaking cultures and literary readings. Introduces structures and strategies to express opinions and discuss some abstract topics. Provides instruction of intermediate level Spanish that builds upon the existing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and the cultural heritage and knowledge of heritage speakers. The course will increase awareness of linguistic registers, discuss items beyond the familiar routine and develop an appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures. This course is entirely conducted in Spanish and is designed for heritage speakers of Spanish or other linguistically qualified students. The course is equivalent to SPAN M03.
Emphasizes an awareness of cultural norms, values and culturally relevant customs and events. Expands upon culture and facilitate language acquisition through listening, speaking, reading and writing through the study of Spanish-speaking cultures and literary readings. Facilitates the expression of more complex ideas, opinions, and abstract concepts. Reviews the more complex linguistic structures and more sophisticated communicative skills.
