The Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC)

The Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC) at Moorpark College provides academic support to students and professional support for instructors in order to improve student retention and success. The TLC provides individual and group tutoring both online and on ground, as well as course embedded tutors, workshops etc. To receive tutoring in any of the following areas, currently registered students will be enrolled in COL M05 (Supervised Tutoring Across the Curriculum), a zero (0) unit course, free to Moorpark College students. This process is initiated at the time of the first tutoring session.

Subject Tutoring

The Tutoring Center offers tutoring in math, writing, and general study skills applied across all disciplines. Additionally, the Tutoring Center offers tutoring in select subjects including Spanish and ESL (grammar and conversation). All subject tutoring is conducted on a drop-in basis.

Math and Science Center

The Math and Science Center supports student success in various math and science courses. Multiple subject tutoring is available in the following formats:

  • in-person tutoring at the LL 3rd floor pods
  • online tutoring via link on the website
  • tutor-led group study sessions

All services and resources are free to currently enrolled Moorpark College students. Tutoring is drop-in; no appointment is needed. For complete information on the Math and Science Center, including up-to-date hours and current subject availability, please visit the website.

CET

The Course Embedded Tutoring Program (CET) is designed to reduce the barrier of entry for students who could benefit from tutorial support in courses with historically low success rates by bringing the tutoring straight to their learning environment. This is a method of support which supplements our daily drop-in tutoring available to students in our Math and Science and Writing Centers.  

The CET Program introduces the following interventions into participating classes:

  • in-class learning assistance during instruction and tutor-facilitated microlesson presentations on critical study skills. 
  • tutor-led, small group review sessions outside of class
  • two-way texting program to facilitate outreach between tutors & students 
  • robust, ongoing training for CETs & Faculty Partners, positioning tutors as vital stakeholders in the mission of student success and encouraging collaboration between tutors and faculty in the service of students.  

The CET program currently supports select courses in the following disciplines:

  • Transfer-level math courses impacted by AB705/1705, including:

    • Math C2210
  • Anatomy/Physiology
  • Biotechnology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Engineering

All services and resources offered are free to currently enrolled Moorpark College students. Students can find courses tagged for CET by clicking the “additional information” button featured on each course listing on the schedule of classes.

Writing Center

The Writing Center supports students' writing, reading, and study skills across the curriculum. Writing Center tutors provide support and instruction in the following formats:

  • drop-by tutoring in LL32
  • online tutoring via Zoom by appointment
  • asynchronous email tutoring
  • workshops
  • poetry readings, guest writers, and special events
  • embedded tutoring in some English classes

All services are free to currently enrolled Moorpark College students. Tutoring sessions are 30-45 minutes. For complete information on the Writing Center, including up-to-date hours, and resources, visit the website.

College Courses (listed under “College” in the Catalog)

Students may enroll in credit-based and non-credit based courses to improve learning skills or to acquire tutoring and peer-mentoring skills. "College" courses support and augment the academic services provided by the Tutoring and Learning Center.

  • College Strategies (COL M01): Develops students’ learning strategies for college and life skill success. Examines and practices critical thinking, study methods, learning styles, time management, test preparation and test-taking, and self-regulated learning. Addresses psychological, physiological, and sociological issues that impact the culture of higher education and help prepare students for college readiness.
  • Tutoring Methods (COL M902): Introduces methods for tutoring individuals and groups. Examines learning theories and instructional pedagogies, and provides opportunities for application of skills to tutoring sessions.

Computer Labs

The Open Access Lab on the 1st floor of the LLR building has 140 computers, and additional computers are available on the 2nd and 3rd floors. These labs are open to all currently enrolled students, and they offer Internet access, printing, scanning, Office software, and course-specific software. Some departments also offer specialized computer labs for their students. When computers are in high demand, academic use takes precedence over personal use. Assistive Technology is available for students with special needs. More information is available from the Access Office at (805) 378-1461.

  • Use of the Internet while on Campus - Wired and wireless Internet access is provided by the college to enable students to complete educational pursuits in conjunction with class assignments and general research. It is expected that all campus Internet users will act in an ethical and lawful manner. All users need to adhere to district policy AP 3720-A on Computer and Network Use.   • Privacy on the Internet - Be aware that any electronic mail sent or received over the Internet is not truly private. Moorpark College reserves the right to monitor and access any information sent or received via college-provided access to the Internet.
