Chicana/o Studies, Associate in Arts

The Associate in Arts in Chicana/o Studies advances a critical understanding of the Chicana/o and Latina/o experience in the United States. The curriculum is designed to provide an awareness, knowledge, and appreciation of the language, history, culture, politics, and creative accomplishments and contributions of Chicana/o and Latina/o communities. Whether completing the AA in preparation for transfer to a Bachelor's degree program in Chicana/o Studies or to deepen one's understanding of Chicana/o culture, students pursuing the AA in Chicana/o Studies will have the opportunity to select from a wide range of courses that reflect the multidisciplinary approach of the major.

In order to earn an Associate in Arts in Chicana/o Studies, students are required to:
- Complete Oxnard College’s General Education requirements to include areas 1-7 or Cal-GETC.
- Complete a minimum of 18 units and all required coursework for the Chicana/o Studies major as listed in the Oxnard College catalog with a grade of “C” or better (or a “P”) in each of the courses selected.
- Complete a minimum of 60 degree-applicable units. Students planning to transfer should complete 60 CSU transferable or 60 UC transferable units, depending on their intended transfer destination.
- Complete requirements in scholarship (2.0 minimum cumulative degree-applicable GPA).
- Complete 12 units in residence within the Ventura County Community College District.
Note: This program is designed to prepare students for transfer to UCSB and other institutions with programs not aligned with an Associate Degree for Transfer pathway. However, the AA-T in Chicana/o Studies, Latina/o Studies is the preferred transfer pathway for most Chicana/o Studies, Latina/o Studies, and related majors at California State University (CSU) campuses. Cal-GETC is the general education pattern that most transfer students should complete. Students should consult with an Oxnard College counselor to determine the best degree for their intended transfer institution or their educational goal.
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Critically analyze the Chicana/o experience from a variety of cultural, historical, and socio-political theories and perspectives.
- Apply historical and cultural knowledge of the Chicana/o experience to analyze contemporary socio-political issues affecting Chicana/o communities.
- Develop and articulate effective plans for promoting culturally responsive social change in Chicana/o communities and broader society.
- Analyze the role that race and ethnicity play and have played in shaping the experiences of different ethnic groups in the United States, with an emphasis on Chicana/os.
- Examine the role of activism and struggle in shaping Chicano/a consciousness.
