MESA

The MESA Community College Program empowers students pursuing science, engineering and math (STEM) majors to successfully transfer to four-year institutions. This support is especially crucial to first-generation, low-income, and minoritized community college students (Black, Latine, Asian/Pacific Islander). The MESA Community College Program is a partnership between Oxnard College and the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.

Eligibility:

  1. Declare a calculus based (minimum of one semester required) major in math, science, or engineering field.
  2. Planning to transfer to a four-year institution.
  3. Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  4. Completed MATH R115 College Algebra (Units: 4) or higher.
  5. Demonstrated financial need by receiving federal and/or state financial aid (California Promise Grant, PELL Grant, Cal Grant, etc.).
  6. First-generation college student.

Main components include:

  • Academic Excellence Workshops: A small community learning environment for students to work collaboratively in mastering course material with the guidance of an instructor and/or successful student lead. The AEW is designed to give students the opportunity to enhance their learning experience for a particular course.
  • Intro to Engineering course: New students majoring in Engineering are encouraged to enroll in ENGR R101 to explore the various branches of engineering, the functions of an engineer, and the industries in which engineers work
  • Academic advising/counseling: Students receive individualized academic guidance and develop multi-year plans to determine the most effective course sequence and transfer in a timely manner.
  • MESA Center: This dedicated multipurpose space is the hub for studying, workshops, special activities and information sharing. It is a key element in building a close learning community.
  • Assistance in the transfer process: MESA provides counseling, workshops and visits to four-year universities.
  • Career development: Students learn specifics about various STEM majors and job experiences. Field trips, mentors, career fairs, internship and scholarships guidance are also offered.
  • Links with student and professional organizations: These resources provide mentors, guest speakers and tours of companies.
  • Professional development: Through workshops, conferences, and mock job fairs, students learn soft skills, corporate culture, resume writing and interviewing skills.
  • Industry Advisory partnerships: Local boards offer valuable connections between students and industry leaders. Corporate representatives, including MESA alumni, participate on boards and provide scholarships, strategic planning, summer internships, field trips, scholarships, employment opportunities and other resources.
